A more relaxed resort

Essaouira Morocco

Why not spend some time on the coast. Essaouira, a fortified town, is a beach resort with a small fishing harbour, fortifications and whitewashed houses. It can be reached by road from Agadir or Marrakech. The town is pervaded with a calm, languid atmosphere, reminiscent of its ‘hippy’ days in the 60’s when Jimi Hendrix was a visitor. In June a four day music festival is held here, which is popular as ever. You will also find the woodworker’s art is much in evidence in many small craft shops dotted around Essaouira, with many artists located here. You will find Essaouira not as intense as Marrakech.

Passing the time

Essaouira is a great place to windsurf or kitesurf – you can also have lessons for both if you fancy a new hobby. Or you can take a day trip to the more frenetic Marrakech – quite a different atmosphere all together, but well worth a visit to see Djemaa El Fna, the main square. Essaouira has its own smaller Medina where you can haggle for goods, or take a stroll along the promenade to the harbour to see the catch of the day or simply relax and enjoy the hotel spa. Golf is easily arranged to if this is your game.

Art, history and the harbour

Essaouira has always appealed to artists and so it is appropriate that there is a Museum of Regional Art (the Sidi Ben Abdallah) the ground floor is dedicated to music whilst the regional art of rugs, jewellery costumes and and reproduction henna body art drawings are on the upper floor.  This area has a strong Andalucian link and the heritage reflects that.

The Skala (fortifications) just outside town have terrific views of the town and surrounding areas.

The harbour where local fishermen bring in their catches has open air cafes where you choose your fish from the days catch and it is prepared for you there and then, you can’t get fresher than that and the atmosphere is vibrant.

Two centre holidays

We would be happy to combine Marrakech with Essaouira or Agadir on the coast. Clients taking a two-centre or Fly/Drive holiday are recommended to spend the last days of their holiday in Marrakech, as we feel that the hotels there are generally of a higher standard. This is a perfect combination – a beautiful beach resort with the more hectic tempo of Marrakech. Morocco has so many different faces – we can help you discover some of this captivating country.
