FLORA AND FAUNA IN ABUNDANCE

Ideal for either a relaxing or energetic holiday

Funchal Madeira

Funchal is the capital city of Madeira, located on the south coast with a sub-tropical climate with even, year round temperatures. It is nestled in a natural amphitheatre, facing the Atlantic with the mountains behind. Funchal is a cosmopolitan city with bars, restaurants, parks and some great shopping. You will also find a busy port in Funchal that welcomes cruise ships on a daily basis.

Most of our hotels in Madeira are in Funchal itself, so everything is within an easy walk. Larger hotels are generally located on the coast and smaller, more intimate ‘Quinta’s’ are located slightly inland with fantastic views.  We have something to suit every taste.

Dining Out

In the evenings life continues apace in Funchal. There are hundreds of restaurants from the first class to the family business where service excels. Lots of island dishes, in particular the fresh Atlantic fish, are delicious, do sample the ‘espetada’ – beef cooked over a fire of laurel and served on a skewer.

Golf

The mild climate makes Madeira ideal for golf. The Madeira Golf and Country Club at Santo da Serra, 15 miles from Funchal, has hosted the Madeira Open since 1993. It is part of the PGA European Tour. A second continuous 18 hole course is available at the stunningly beautiful Palheiro Golf. We have full details on both courses. Reids Palace, Casa Velha do Palheiro and Cliff Bay are founder members of this golf course and as such are able to offer guaranteed start times, 30% reduction on green fees (payable locally) and courtesy transport to the golf course (subject to availability).

Things to do

Easily accessible from Funchal are 600 miles of walks, called Levadas, some can be quite challenging and walking shoes would prove useful.  Day trips are easily arranged walking a levada with a guide. Water-sports abound (subject to weather) with scuba-diving, deep-sea fishing and dinghy sailing. Sea bathing is quite safe too. As one would expect of an island referred to as the Floating Garden of the Atlantic, Funchal has many exotic gardens that can be visited and you mustn’t forget to visit the flower market in town. Or why not pop into one of the many wineries in Funchal, they welcome visitors. Be sure to try the local Madeira. There is also a cable car that leaves from Funchal that takes you up to nearby Monte – well worth visiting for the views and to see this lovely little village and local church.

Festivals

Funchal hosts many festivals throughout the year – the most famous being the New Years Eve fireworks, which according to the Guinness Book of Records is the largest display in the World! Other festivals include the spectacular Carnival in February and the colourful Flower Festival in May, followed by the Atlantic Festival  in June, with weekly fireworks every Saturday evening.

Then in late August early September, Funchal hosts the Wine Festival – so be sure to pick your holiday dates carefully as there is so much to miss.

Car Hire

A hire car gives you so much freedom and adds an extra dimension to any holiday, but particularly in Madeira as some of the greatest pleasures are to be found in the countryside.
