CANICO IS IN TWO PARTS, UPPER & LOWER

Midway between the airport & Funchal

Canico Madeira

The original settlement of Caniço sits on the top of a hill which slopes down to the coast, where visitors will find Caniço de Baixo (Lower Caniço).

Nowadays Caniço is quite a buzzing little town which has developed in recent years to be second only to Funchal for shops, bars and restaurants.  Funchal is easy to reach from here by frequent local buses.

The centre of Caniço is still dominated by the old church and the village square although every modern convenience is now here too.

Local Attractions

Attractions nearby include the Palheiro Golf Course, about 20 minutes away.  Nearby Santa Cruz has some fascinating monuments to admire including the church of São Salvador which is almost 500 years old and the 19th century law courts.  To bring you up-to-date there is also an Aquapark here too.

In contrast Caniço de Baixo, which is about 2 kms downhill from Caniço is a modern resort with several hotels, apartments, restaurants and bars.  The views on the way down are really stunning.  Scuba diving is available here – a great way to explore the clear protected waters of Garajau natural marine park.
