Lake Garda's most enchanting resort

simrione 200x240

Jutting out into the Mediterranean like azure waters of the wide southern point of the lake, this gorgeous peninsula is, for many, the jewel in the crown of Lake Garda. Little wonder the Roman poet Catullus decided to build his home here at the tip of this scenic headland.

The majestic Scaliger Castle dominates the entrance to the characterful and teeming pedestrianised historic centre of Sirmione, dotted with cafés, bars, boutiques, restaurants and gelaterias and criss-crossed by beckoning flower filled alleyways and colourful, charming residences. It’s a shopper’s paradise, but also perfect for whiling away the time in one of the many piazzas over a chilled Aperol Spritz!

You can escape the hubbub on the other side of the historic centre, where the peninsula widens out into a lovely green headland, boasting some fine walks, interspersed with olive groves and areas to sit and relax with fine views over the lake. There are also a few inviting shingle beaches for swimming in shallow clear waters, such as ‘Lido delle Bionde’, plus of course a visit to Catullus’ house is a must… if you don’t fancy the walk, why not take the local tourist train,  Sirmione’s ‘trenino’? For a true day’s relaxation and pampering, perhaps treat yourself to some time in the natural Thermal SPA, for which Sirmione is renowned.

More exploring

At the tip of the peninsula lie the remains of an enormous Roman villa, allegedly the home of the poet Catullus after whom it was named.  It is well worth a wander around this huge site and the views from here are fabulous.

Sirmione and the southern end of the lake boasts a decisively Mediterranean feel with a climate to match; at times you could almost feel you were in southern Greece! It’s a fashionable, extremely pretty and popular resort with a regular ferry/hydrofoil service from its centre to many of Lake Garda’s other resorts and attractions. For opera lovers a stay here provides the closest access to Verona’s summer Arena Di Verona Festival and the timeless city of Venice is also within easy reach on a day trip.
