A fairytale like village

Gargnano 200x240

It’s here that you start to get a regular glimpse of the unique ‘limonaia’ houses – beautiful historic stone structures used to house and grow lemons in this wonderfully sheltered microclimate – the most northerly point in Europe where this fruit grows in abundance.

The fairytale like village of Gargnano sits halfway along this gorgeous stretch of the lake and boasts a stunning lakeside location. The sheer beauty of this peaceful, picturesque haven have attracted some notable characters who have chosen to live here. Two who succumbed to its charm are writer DH Lawrence and the dictator Benito Mussolini, who resided at the Villa Feltrinelli.

In the local area

Pretty Gargnano is certainly one of the better kept secrets on Lake Garda and is not as well known as some of the more commercialised resorts. It has an incredibly charming ambience, with cute flower filled alleyways, intimate piazzas and a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops. There’s a tangible air of elegance, with various local events held throughout the year, such as jazz concerts and the infamous ‘Cento Miglia’ yacht race, which begins just up the road every September in nearby Bogliaco. Close to the village centre you can also enjoy some lovely wide public beaches, ideal for chilling out and swimming in the lake.

A regular ferry service from the main lakeside hub in town during the summer season allows relaxing day trips to other scenic resorts such as Salò, Gardone, Malcesine and Limone.

For those looking for a more energetic day out there are plenty of lovely walks with incredible lake views in the hills above Gargnano – where you can really venture off the beaten track – and perhaps make it as far as the hidden gem of Lake Valvestino, where you really do feel that you have entered a different world!
