For a unique family holiday you’re sure to remember forever, I recommend the Aurora Snow Package. This guided four-day tour takes you to the best viewing spots for the ultimate enjoyment of the incredible Northern Lights. A once-in-a-lifetime holiday that is a particularly amazing experience for children and nature lovers.
At Prestige Holidays, we offer a range of luxury holidays in Yukon and Alaska but a family favourite is, without a doubt, our Aurora Snow Package. Being able to witness the Aurora Borealis (which translates into ‘dawn of the north’) is a magical experience unlike any other. The lights can extend over 80km of skyline and reach as high as 640km above the earth’s surface – it really is a spectacular sight.
This four-day itinerary promises to provide you with truly unforgettable family memories. The area in which you will be staying has a wonderfully dark sky as there is very little light pollution. This makes it the perfect place to view the Northern Lights.
After departing from Vancouver and travelling to Whitehorse, guests will be taken to their accommodation – Sundog Retreat – to begin their Alaskan adventure. A delicious, hearty meal is served, and then visitors are invited to catch their first glimpse of the Northern Lights. They can be seen from the cottages but there is also a heated outdoor viewing centre complete with a campfire which the youngsters will enjoy. Telescopes are also available for those entranced by the constellations.
After a comfortable night in their cottages, guests are treated to a three-hour city tour the next morning. Enjoy the beauties of the Main Street and visit the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Here you are free to explore the rich culture of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation people, including their language, values and traditional ways of life.
Also included on the city tour is a visit to the Log Skyscrapers of Whitehorse – unique buildings that have been designated a Municipal Historic Site. Lastly, you will have a chance to see the Sternwheeler S.S. Klondike II, first launched in 1937. Children love to admire this large vessel as it is quite unusual.
Spend the morning enjoying the facilities of Sundog Resort – the hot tub and sauna are both available for guests to use. At noon you will have the opportunity to try dogsledding! Learn how to guide a team of dogs around the beautiful wilderness of Yukon – the whole family is sure to enjoy this unique treat.
Dogsledding is a method of travel developed by the northern Aboriginal peoples thousands of years ago. Generally, two to twelve dogs are used to pull the sled, and the first pair always guide the rest of the team.
Head back to the resort in time for dinner and experience another magical glimpse of the Northern Lights.
On your last day, you will transfer back to Whitehorse Airport, admiring the impressive scenery on the journey.
