The striking desert landscape of Jordan has played host to some of the most fascinating events in human history. Join our expert guide Dr Neil Faulkner as he reveals the region’s complex military past in our tour, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’s War’.
Military Manoeuvres on Desert Sands
The focus of this tour is uncovering the history of the Great Arab Revolt by following the footsteps of the famous T. E. Lawrence. The tour visits sites described by Lawrence in his famous works, such as the twelfth-century Shobek Crusader Castle. He wrote a detailed description of sheltering here in the depths of winter, huddled around a brazier fire.
The iconic sights of Jordan are not neglected, however, as the itinerary includes a day trip to the towering Nabatean ruins of Petra, as well as trips to many places further off the beaten track, meaning our guests experience far more than the average tourist.
Dr Faulkner has written ten books including Lawrence of Arabia’s War: The Arabs, the British and the Remaking of the Middle East in WWI; he has appeared on Channel 4’s Time Team and BBC2’s Timewatch and is involved in many important archaeological projects all over the world. Dr Faulkner knows the region well, having co-directed the Great Arab Revolt Project from 2006 to 2014.
To give you a taste of what to expect, here are just a few of the cultural highlights of the tour:
- Visits to Roman and Byzantine ruins
- 4×4 trip into Wadi Rum where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed
- Trip to the site of the Battle of Tafila – a current archaeological site
- Night in a luxury desert ‘camp’
- Off-road exploration of Ottoman military sites
At Prestige we like to go the extra mile to ensure a unique experience. On this tour, each member will receive a complimentary copy of Dr Faulkner’s Lawrence of Arabia’s War, in addition to T. E. Lawrence’s The Seven Pillars of Wisdom – the account of his war experiences that encompasses the vast culture and geography of the region, as well as military strategy. These books, along with Dr Faulkner’s expertise, will help bring the complicated military history of Jordan to life and help you imagine Lawrence’s time in the country.
