The Canary Islands are known for their vibrant atmosphere. Always a fun place to visit, these small isles become full of life in festival season. Here we’ll introduce you to two of the most interesting fiestas held in the Canary Islands.
Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
This larger-than-life festival has been around since the fifteenth century and has been growing ever since. Most of the action takes place in Santa Cruz, including the incredible Opening Parade. Don’t miss the crowning of the Carnival Queen, which heralds the beginning of the fiesta. However, Ash Wednesday’s mock funeral procession, held for a paper sardine, is also worth catching.
The Deep Sea-themed 2019 festival will run from 24 February to 10 March.
Where to Stay
If you’re heading to the Carnival of Santa Cruz, make the Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey your base. This hotel is well-located; it’s close to local bars and restaurants as well as shops. It has a large pool and a beautiful spa, and has played host to many famous guests over the years, including the King and Queen of Spain and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Los Indianos Carnival in La Palma
The Los Indianos Carnival, held in Santa Cruz de la Palma, takes place in March or February each year and is perfect for those who like to participate in local culture. Originally celebrating the return of wealthy locals from the colonies to La Palma, the carnival is now a huge street party sometimes called The White Party. All participants dress in white and take part in a talcum powder fight. Talcum powder is handed out for free and large cannons shoot powder over the crowds. Relax after the festivities with a cool mojito in your luxury accommodation.
Where to Stay
For a perfect mixture of tradition and style, make sure that you stay in the Hacienda San Jorge. Located in the small resort of Los Cancajos, the hotel is comfortable and stylish, offering easy access to the stunning black sand beach of Playa de Los Cancajos.
The hotel has a large saltwater pool, sauna, steam beds and an attractive sun terrace. There is the option for both self-catered and catered stays.
