As the leading industry specialist in holidays to Croatia, we at Prestige are proud of our encyclopaedic knowledge of this beautiful country and the vast range of accommodation options we can offer our clients. I have made it a personal mission to introduce as many holidaymakers as possible to the delights of some of the lesser-known Croatia resorts.
Although I could write dozens of blog posts about the delights of famous Croatian gems such as Dubrovnik and Zagreb – and believe me, I have – I always relish the chance to introduce a client to a destination that they have never considered before in Croatia. Resorts along the coast, from the pine-clad peninsula of Istria to the archipelagic islands of Dalmatia, offer fantastic variety for the discerning traveller.
If you’re looking for a destination with natural beauty and peaceful tranquillity with a dose of authentic culture thrown in for good measure, you’re in luck: here are three of my favourite little-known Croatia resorts.
Culture Lovers: Fall in Love with Lovran
With its cobbled Old Town, seafront promenade and grand Austro-Hungarian mansions, the elegant resort of Lovran is a great fit for anyone looking to take in some culture without the crowds. Unlike some of the quieter destinations on this list, the town boasts a great selection of boutiques, bistros and wine bars, allowing you to indulge stylishly and authentically on your Croatian break.
One of the key cultural aspects of Lovran is its love of annual festivals, which celebrate the local foods that appear on many a restaurant menu. I would definitely recommend checking whether your trip will coincide with any of the following celebrations:
- The Asparagus Festival in April
- The Cherry Festival in June
- The Chestnut Festival in October
Stay at Remisens Excelsior
We think that Remisens Excelsior is the best accommodation option in Lovran. Its position right on the promenade makes it an excellent base for exploring the treasures of the town, while also providing breathtaking sea views across the Adriatic.
Romance Seekers: Say Hello to Sipan
If your dream is to walk hand in hand with a certain special someone through fruit-laden orchards and verdant vineyards, Sipan is the destination for you. This secluded island in the Elafiti archipelago is just 9km long and 2.5km across, which makes it an ideal size to explore on foot.
Past clients have commented that time seems to stop as you wander through the island’s olive groves and orchards growing figs, pomegranates, grapes and citrus fruits. For further escapism, simply take a good book to the uncrowded beach and enjoy the peace and sunshine.
Stay at Hotel Bozica
Hotel Bozica makes for the perfect romantic retreat – but move fast, because it books up quickly! There’s no better place to enjoy its views over the bay than at the Restaurant Bozica, which serves delicious fresh seafood caught by local fishermen.
Avid Oenophiles: Raise a Glass to Orebic
Croatia’s reputation as a world-class wine producer is growing year on year; we often suggest that our clients go on a vineyard tour and tasting if they are visiting wine-growing regions. This is exactly the advice I would give to anyone planning a trip to the lovely island of Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula.
The region is famous for its highly-regarded Dingac and Postup red wine varieties, which are only grown in the specific microclimate of this peninsula. A great way to learn more about Croatian winemaking and to enjoy the sun-soaked vineyards is to take a wine tour by bike.
Stay at Hotel Indijan
We love the intimate, boutique feel and excellent service of the Hotel Indijan, which is why we recommend it to those looking for a secluded retreat in Orebic. The hotel even has its own vineyard and wine cellar at Potomje.
