The stunning island of La Gomera is a hidden paradise, and one that escapes the influx of budget travellers, appealing more to the traveller who seeks a little luxury on their well-earned holiday. A sedate pace, stunning scenery, sophisticated accommodation and elegant bars and restaurants welcome any visitor who appreciates the finer things in life.
One of the surprises here on La Gomera is the incredible golf course, Tecina Golf, situated near Playa de Santiago. The only course on the island, this spot, set high above the Lomada Tecina and the Atlantic Ocean, is impressive in more ways than one.
The Facts and Stats
The course area is roughly 55 hectares and covers almost 6.3 kilometres. I am always fascinated that the greens descend over a whopping 175 metres, and that the meticulous design and quality construction mean that the golfing is great no matter what season you come to play. Indeed, I have played here in very early spring.
All golfers are accommodated at Hotel Jardín Tecina. Landing holes and fairways are wide, but some greens are rolling and have been created to challenge the more experienced golfer and demand a certain level of skill, so no matter what your level of experience, you can have a great game!
What Makes Tecina Golf Unique
We have never seen an 18-hole field like this one. Views from every vantage are simply breathtaking, and because the route has been cleverly designed with a series of terraces leading downwards towards the sea, you have a continuous downhill experience and have the sea in view at all time as you play. There are no slopes or nasty descents. During your game, the vegetation changes from arid scrub-like species to tropical plants and fruit trees as you make your way downwards. You really have to see the tenth hole to believe it; on one side of a ravine that divides the fairway, the hole looks as if it is floating in the air next to the cliff. I love the fourth and twelfth holes, too – both of them are very memorable.
A game of golf would not be complete without a drink in the Club House afterwards, and the Club House here is bound to impress. Boasting incredible views over the Ocean and Tapahuga Beach, this bar is the place to be seen.
Stay in the Jardin Tecina
I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough, and we are proud to have it in our collection. Not only is it attached to the golf course, but it also benefits from being nestled into the shaded paradise of beautiful extensive gardens above the town of Playa Santiago. Offering comfort, excellence and sophistication, the hotel provides a superb place in which to kick back and relax.
Rooms are graded, but all are spacious and have free Wi-Fi and a mini-bar. Nightlife lovers will appreciate that this place comes alive in the evening when the dancing shows, music and other entertainment get started. This fabulous hotel also has tennis courts, a gym and a dive school. When you are ready for some relaxation, you can head to the sauna, enjoy a massage or treat yourself to a facial in the beauty salon.
