When you think of Bermuda, visions of pristine beaches, spectacular sunsets and dramatic crystal caves probably come to mind. But we at Prestige Holidays also know and love this beautiful holiday oasis for something else: its outstanding and ever-surprising cuisine. If you’re looking for a luxurious gastronomic experience that’ll enchant your taste buds like never before, look no further than our selection of luxury hotels on the island.
Every few years, I cannot help but give in to one of my guilty pleasures: spending a glorious week in Bermuda, my sunny home away from home. While I’ve spent countless hours tanning, going whale watching and admiring the ubiquitous flora and fauna, it’s the island’s mouth-watering cuisine that keep me coming back time and time again.
Don’t believe me? You will after hearing more about our team’s favourite spots for wining and dining. For an unforgettable culinary adventure, read on.
One of the most highly rated luxury hotels in our portfolio is the Fairmont Southampton, which is situated a few minutes from the island’s capital, Hamilton. While the hustle and bustle of Bermuda’s capital city is only a few miles from your doorstep, this holiday haven is an oasis of tranquillity… and indulgence. From its panoramic views across the island to its spa, pool and nearby beach, you’re in for some serious R&R – especially on the food front!
The Waterlot Inn
Although the Fairmont Southampton has a whopping nine eateries, the Waterlot Inn is one of my clients’ absolute favourites. If you mention this restaurant to almost anyone in Bermuda, they’re sure to rave about its lip-smacking gourmet dishes, which are famous across the whole island. Along with its exceptional cuisine, it’s well worth uncovering the inn’s remarkable history. While it’s been a restaurant for several decades, the building has been around for a lot longer: it was erected in 1670 and was originally the ancestral abode of Bermuda’s Darrell family. When the premises were inherited by Claudia Darrell in the twentieth century, she converted the space into a restaurant, which has attracted VIPs such as Mark Twain and Eleanore Roosevelt over the years.
If you’re looking for a steak grilled to perfection, you’ll find yourself in seventh heaven at the Waterlot Inn. While watching the sunset from its rustic dining room, you can also savour its top-notch seafood specialities. After dining here, you’ll understand why this historic restaurant has received a Wine Spectator and an AAA Four Diamond Award… and will wonder why it hasn’t received more yet.
Believe it or not: there’s more! The Fairmont Southampton is also renowned for its wealth of other restaurants that guarantee a terrific gastronomic experience. When you’re eating your way through the hotel, be sure to book a table at the Ocean Club for some scrumptious sea food and for spectacular sea views. Or, if you’re sharing a meal with your special someone, why not take advantage of the hotel’s bespoke Bermuda Moon Dance and enjoy a romantic dinner right on the beach?
The Reefs Hotel & Club Suites
In the island’s parish of Southampton, the Reefs Hotel & Club Suites never fails to meet and exceed our clients’ expectations. Not only does this accommodation have a private, pink sand beach, but it also delights guests with its infinity pool, tennis courts and luxurious spa. While this may sound like more than enough to make any visitor’s most opulent dreams come true, it gets better: the hotel is celebrated for taking fine dining to a new level of extravagance.
Although I’m a big fan of all restaurants in this post, I am (coco)nuts about this one! If authentic Caribbean fare and beachside dining are what you’re after, there’s no better place than the hotel’s Coconuts Restaurant. While you’re feasting your eyes on the sparkling waters and surrounding cliffs, why not appease your taste buds with some South Shore Bermuda Fish Chowder, the flavour of which is supplemented with sherry pepper and rum, or with a pan-seared rockfish filet and lobster potatoes? Trust me: these dishes sound as incredible as they taste, and – if you weren’t so busy scoping out all of the island’s best restaurants – you’d come back for more.
If you’re dreaming of a more intimate and bespoke meal, the Reefs Hotel & Club Suites has several other surprises up its sleeve. Many of my clients have opted for its Signature Experiences with their partners or their whole families, and have given nothing but high praise to the hotel’s private beach dining and fun family BBQs and bonfires. After all, what could be better than spending some quality time with your loved ones in a breathtakingly beautiful location?
Top Tip: Be sure to ask our team about these offerings, as some of them are seasonal.
Last but certainly not least, the Rosewood Bermuda strikes the ideal balance between luxury, serenity and romance. Whether you’re ready to lounge at the swimming pools or on the island’s largest private beach, relax to the max at the spa, or perfect your putt at the 18-hole championship golf course, this hotel’s deluxe facilities couldn’t make for a more idyllic experience. All guests – but particularly starry-eyed couples – will also appreciate the spectacular views from the Rosewood’s many terraces and restaurants. As the hotel sits on (and is part of) the 200-acre Tucker’s Point Club, you’ll enjoy picturesque views of the Atlantic, the Harrington Sound and of Castle Harbour while sipping a glass of champagne with your other half. Returning to your everyday life after being pampered from head to toe will be difficult, to say the least.
For some of the best sea views in Bermuda, a visit to The Point Restaurant & Terrace is an absolute must. You’ll not only enjoy a show-stopping view and exquisite murals by Gerard Henderson, but will also savour every bite of your breakfast, lunch or dinner. Every meal makes use of local ingredients to create innovative and flavourful dishes; some of my team’s favourites are duck breast with cherries and brandy, as well as pan-roasted halibut with saffron rouille and curried cauliflower. In addition to indulging in one of the thousands of wine bottles that adorn the restaurant’s walls, it’s worth letting Executive Chef Gerry Adams tantalise your senses with his 10-course meal, which is sure to delight, surprise and satiate you.
If you’d like to take a taste of Bermuda back home with you, the Rosewood’s special gastronomic experiences are right up your alley. While the hotel’s culinary programme – called “A Sense of Taste” – is comprised of numerous lessons and experiences, our team’s particularly enjoyed Partners in Provenance and Epicurean Encounters. While the former combines a deep sea fishing lesson with a tartare-making class, the latter teaches participants how to make delectable dishes with nothing but locally grown and seasonal produce. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as sitting down to a meal that you’ve prepared from scratch… and whose refreshing flavours couldn’t be more Bermudian.
