Family Adventures: Our Favourite Watersports Destinations

Family holidays are a great opportunity for not only keeping the kids active but for taking part in new, exciting activities together – fortunately there are a great range of places to stay in Prestige’s collection where you can combine a break in the sun with some adrenaline-bursting, water-sporting action.

Water sports are particularly fantastic for older children, and there’s no end to the type of activities available, from water and jet skiing, to snorkelling and scuba diving, to canoeing and sailing – no matter how fussy, you are sure to find something to float the boat of the choosiest of teenagers, quite literally! With plenty of beginner courses available, you can all enjoy some entertainment on the water regardless of previous experience, picking up new skills, discovering hidden talents, and acquiring plenty of golden memories along the way.

Here are my top recommendations, based on what I’ve heard back from our clients, of places to visit in the Mediterranean that are brilliant if you’re looking for some adventures on the waves whilst also enjoying great accommodation options nearby.

Sicily

The Verdura Water Sports Centre is the essential destination for aficionados in Sicily. Here you can take part in a wide array of activities led by trained and friendly staff, who can offer private lessons, courses and rental equipment, from flippers and snorkels through to canoes, windsurfers and sailing boards. They also provide free introductory, theory-based courses, which take place on the beach or by the pool – I know from a recent conversation with one of our clients that this is a great way to help prepare for activities you might want to try out for the first time and deciding which is best suited to you.

Banana boating or stand up paddling are the kind of family excursions that ensure even the moodiest of teens enjoy your quality time together. Give them a thrill to boast about back home by letting them try their hand at waterskiiing or wakeboarding. Or, if any of you need to brush up on your front crawl or backstroke – particularly if, like me, you find it’s been too long since you last took a dip in the waves – swimming lessons are also available.

Recommended Hotel

Verdura Golf and Spa Resort: this hotel is perfect for accessing the activities on offer at Verdura Sports Centre, and has a wide range of rooms to suit families of every type. As the name suggests, there is also a first-class, 18-hole golf course on site, as well as a host of other marvellous facilities to enjoy, whilst the service of the staff will ensure your stay is as effortless as possible.

Anassa, Cyprus

The beautiful sands of Anassa beach form the perfect setting for enjoying all that Cyprus’s favourite water-sports resort has on offer, and is a favourite of many of my clients. Perhaps start off gently by taking an inflatable banana ride, or going canoeing, before working up to the higher adrenaline activities, such as parasailing and jet skiing. With the Akamas National Park stretching along the coastline, this is a stunning place to explore from the water.

The Latchi Watersports Centre can cater for every age group and type of ability, with highly-qualified, easy-going instructors and staff who are great at mixing with teenagers and older children. They know how to make sure your children have a good time whilst also ensuring safety is a top priority – I have it on good authority that they offer handheld radios for those planning longer boating trips. They can also help you decide which activity is the best fit for you, which I find is often the hardest part! If you’re serious about developing those boating skills, the Centre also offers RYA Sailing Courses and Youth Sailing Courses, of which it’s definitely worth taking advantage.

Anassa Hotel: Located right next door to the beach, the Anassa Hotel is an entirely enclosed resort, making it the ideal place for letting teenagers and older children head on down to the water sports centre at their own time and pace. I’d recommend booking a Junior Suite, which offers plenty of space, and if you’ve got younger children joining you, there’s a superb complimentary children’s club to keep those aged between 3 and 12 entertained whilst you’re busy surfing the waves.

Vilamoura, Algarve

I have been visiting Vilamoura on the Algarve for many years, and have always been impressed by the variety and vitality of its local water sports scene. For a really turbo-charged experience for the whole family to enjoy together, I would recommend taking a private speed boat trip for an hour for €150 with Algarve Xcite, which departs from both Vilamoura and Albufeira Marina and allows you to fully explore this beautiful part of Portugal. Algarve Xcite also offer, on request, water ski and wakeboard lessons, equipped for both beginners and more experienced riders, as well as family fishing trips – there’s no need to worry if you have not tried this before as you will be taken out by an experienced crew who can teach you everything you need to know. A number of our clients have been particularly impressed by how quickly they starting making a catch.

The Lake Resort: only a short step away from Vilamoura Marina, the Lake Resort is a decadent place to unwind after a long day out on the water. It’s also located next to Falesia beach and is home to sweeping golf course, a private seawater lake, a unique natural sand bottom pool, a spa and specially-designed gardens with plants from five different continents. With no shortage of facilities on hand to cater for your every need, you’ll almost find it too hard to prise yourself away and go back to the marina!
