Anyone with children knows that they’re the real bosses of the family holiday – that’s usually perfectly fine with us parents, because making memories for the young ones is what it’s all about. Even better is when the children are old enough to start following their own sporting passions. We invite you to consider the possibility that with a little encouragement, your children might one day be good enough to beat you at your own game…of golf!
Children’s Golfing Holidays – No Handicap for Parents
I’ll be the first to admit that family holidays are not the same as they used to be in my day – but that’s no bad thing. I’m always delighted to assist our Prestige clients travelling with children to organise the perfect holiday to ensure that everyone has a good time, because the fantastic thing about resorts that offer special interest clubs and activities for the youngsters is that the good ones understand that being a good parent and wanting a little fun yourself are not mutually exclusive desires.
The following two properties in our Prestige Holidays collection offer dedicated children’s golfing academies and I highly recommend them if your young ones show an aptitude or interest in the sport. But there’s plenty for you to enjoy as well…
Sicily: Verdura Resort
With a programme aimed at 6-16 year-olds, the wonderful 5-star Vedura Resort’s Junior Golfing Academy provides the ideal grounding in the noble game of golf, even if your young future champions can’t even tell their putter from their chipper. But if they already fancy themselves on par, the academy will challenge and help them improve their game out of sight.
What They’ll Learn
I’ve recommended the Verdura Junior Golfing Academy to a number of clients whose children have given very positive feedback on the range of skills they learnt. As well as getting practical training in playing on a par-3 course they receive in-depth coaching in:
- Bunker shots
- Rules of golf
- Golfing etiquette
Prices and Packages
You can choose from a three or five day course and one aspect I really like is that you can decide yourself whether to purchase the special kit*** they offer, which is handy if your youngsters do not already have their own gear.
3-Day Academy: Without kit, €95, with kit, €170 (includes 4.5 hours tuition)
5-Day Academy: Without kit, €150, with kit, €225 (includes 7.5 hours tuition)
***Kit includes equipment hire, unlimited practice balls, polo shirt, cap, shorts, bag tag and commemorative Verdura golf ball.
For the Parents
Remember when I said the parent’s won’t get forgotten? That’s because the Verdura Resort is innovative enough to offer their Junior Golfing Academy, but at the end of the day it’s simply one of the most luxurious and well-facilitated resorts in Sicily. So, while the younger members of the family are off improving their handicap, you can be relaxing by the 60m infinity pool, getting pampered at the indulgent Verdura Spa, enjoying the fine dining, or heading out on an excursion to the nearby Greek temples or the charming town of Sciacca. With the youngsters nipping at your heels you might even want to take some time to work on your own game on the two championship golf courses.
Spain: La Manga Club – Principe Felipe
La Manga Club Principe Felipe in Spain is renowned as one of the best sports resorts in the world and we’re proud to include it in our collection. With three very different 18-hole golf courses on site, you can bet that if your children are going to develop a genuine passion for golf, this is where they’re going to do it!
The Leadbetter Golf Academy at La Manga Club offers a superb Junior Golf Academy programme that has a reputation for teaching youngsters the basics of the game in a fun and relaxed way. They use the patented SNAG Golf System, which focuses on the core principles of cause and effect, to help young players understand both the game and how to develop their own abilities.
No matter what age your children are, the academy offers a fun and functional programme of activities:
- Junior Under 9s: Lessons and activities for an hour a day over four days using special equipment, graduating to real balls.
- Junior Under 15s: Learning the 3 ‘Ps’ – posture, pivot and positioning. Also introduction to golfing etiquette. Held over four days, 1.5 hours a day.
- Performance Junior Academy Under 17s: For the older players or those with a handicap of 26 or under. Coaching to focus on improving skills, the mental aspects, and preparation for tournaments.
For the Parents
When my clients tell me they’re looking for an active holiday in Spain, one of the first places I recommend is La Manga Club Principe Felipe. There’s a heavy focus on sporting activities like golf, tennis, football and general fitness, but when you’re done for the day (or you just want to escape for a while), their deluxe spa and pampering facilities at Las Lomas Village are just what the physio ordered! You can enjoy such delights as whirlpool baths, thalassotherapy, reflexology, therapeutic massages and a host of spa treatments.
It could be a hard choice: 54 holes of championship golf or 54 ways to wind down those hard working muscles… It’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it and, after all, you’re really just here for the children, aren’t you?
A True Family Bonding Experience
At Prestige Holidays we understand the need to choose a holiday that unites rather than divides the family. Encouraging the children to develop their passion for golf may just be the start of a lifelong family tradition of good, healthy sporting competition… just make sure they don’t get better than you!
