If you are serious about your golf or just want to try it out, there can be no better way than a golfing holiday in the lap of luxury. We have hand selected some of the best hotels that offer a uniquely pleasurable combination of putt and pamper.
While you can play a round of golf at home or visit a local spa, there’s plenty of opportunity to take your passion for the game abroad to a destination where you can restore body and mind on a luxury holiday like no other.
We regularly arrange for our clients to indulge in their favourite past time during the day and to immerse themselves in restorative spas and luxury rooms by night in destinations as diverse as the Algarve, Mallorca and Tenerife.
Dona Filipa, Algarve
The five-star Dona Filipa Hotel is a management favourite here at Prestige Holidays. Nestled in the exclusive Vale de Lobo resort in the Algarve, this elegant hotel benefits from a stunning seafront position as well as access to two world-class golf courses – which is why it makes our list of the top golf and spa resorts in our collection.
If you’re a golf aficionado, I know I’ll be preaching to the choir by recommending a luxury golfing holiday to the Algarve. The standard of the golfing opportunities presented by a stay at the Dona Filipa is truly exceptional.
The 18-hole San Lorenzo Golf Course is exclusively available to hotel guests. Designed by American architects Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, this figure-of-eight course has been thrilling and challenging golfers since it opened in 1988. In September 2016 it was ranked number fifteen out of the top 100 golf resorts in continental Europe by Golf World, which is testament to its excellence. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus to get you to the course in just 15 minutes.
If you could ever tire of San Lorenzo’s 18 holes, there are 27 more to explore at the Pinherios Altos Golf Centre. Although it offers endless high-tech golfing amenities – including a golf clinic, video analysis bays and practice areas for driving, putting and chipping – the comments I get most frequently from clients who have visited is the course’s situation. The Ria Formosa Nature Reserve surrounds you, making it a tranquil and beautiful spot.
There is ample opportunity to enjoy the healing power of pampering during your stay at the Dona Filipa. Choose between the extensive list of in-house ‘beauty experiences’, including luxurious hair, nails and eyelash treatments, or make the 500-metre walk to the Vale do Lobo Royal Spa. This extensive wellbeing centre offers a panoply of spa treatments, including holistic, hydro- and aromatherapies that will leave you feeling utterly relaxed and rejuvenated.
Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel, Mallorca
The Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel is well-known as a paradise for golfers, but it also has a wealth of facilities off the fairways, too. We love its tranquil location, set within beautiful gardens and – of course – the luscious golf courses.
With no fewer than four courses available to guests during their stay, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to golfing opportunities.
- Son Vida – this 18-hole championship golf course is the oldest in Mallorca, having been designed by Fred Hawtree in 1964. In 2001 it was redeveloped and has since hosted the European Tour.
- Son Muntaner – sea and cliff views can be enjoyed from this modern par-72 course, which also has a driving range.
- Son Quint – if you enjoy hilly courses, the 18-hole Son Quint will not disappoint. It has been particularly highly recommended from past clients because of its beautiful ‘Princess Bermuda’ grass.
- Son Quint Pitch & Putt – you can take a break from driving and improve your short game at the nine holes of the island’s only public Pitch and Putt.
The Shine Spa at the Arabella is an oasis of calm. You can let your worries and aches soak away in the soothing water of the pools – one indoor, two outdoor and a therapeutic whirlpool – before enjoying their range of massage and body treatments. A recent client confided that they spent the whole of their final day relaxing in the spa after a full week of golfing; curling up with a book at the peaceful poolside was the perfect end to a stellar holiday.
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, Tenerife
The Dona Filipa and the Arabella are fantastic hotels for fanatical golfers; The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, however, is our top recommendation if your emphasis is on the luxury experience, with some excellent golf thrown in for good measure. With 10 restaurants – two boasting Michelin stars – 7 freshwater swimming pools and a private beach, we believe that this is the most luxurious hotel in Tenerife.
For the ultimate adults-only break, I would recommend a deluxe room or suite in the Tagor’ Villas, which benefit from a private pool, a personal villa attendant and a golf buggy to transport you around the resort – why walk when you can drive?
Abama Golf has everything you need for the perfect game: a par-72 championship course with incredible sea views from each of its 18 holes; a driving range and putting green for perfecting your techniques; and a Michelin-star restaurant, no less, at the club house.
The award-winning spa at the Abama is world class. With so many treatments available, you could have a different relaxation experience every day. I love the sound of their ‘Earth, Wind and Fire’ treatment, inspired by El Teide, the island’s volcano; it uses heated volcanic stones and Lava Sand exfoliation to relax tense muscles and rejuvenate the skin.
