A Romantic Retreat

Sexantio Le Grotte Della Civita – Puglia, Italy

The ancient village of Matera, built into hundreds of caves that pepper the Puglian hillside, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. Sexantio Le Grotte Della Civita is a network of 18 caves located in the oldest part of the village, perched on the edge of the spectacular wilderness of the Murgia National Park. If you’re searching for a hotel with wow factor, you have certainly found it.

Each of the caves – from the 30m² classic rooms to the palatial 110m² executive suites – has been sensitively decorated with neutral, natural materials that let the beauty of the ancient stone walls take centre stage. However, home comforts have not been forgotten; expect roll top baths, air conditioning and free Wifi throughout. I haven’t yet met a client who wasn’t blown away by the stylish simplicity of the hotel.

There’s something about sleeping in a cave that gives you an instinctive feeling of safety and comfort. But these aren’t just rustic shelters from the rain – expect the ultimate in cave luxury!

Make Sure You…

Explore the rich history and culture of surrounding Matera and the Murgia National Park. You can rent either a city or a mountain bike from the hotel, which will give you the freedom to discover the dramatic landscapes and winding streets of the surrounding area.

We often advise couples who are celebrating their honeymoon or a special anniversary to stay at Le Grotte Della Civita – I can’t think of anywhere more romantic. The hotel’s rock-hewn deconsecrated church, first carved out in the thirteenth century, makes an atmospheric setting for a very special candlelit dinner. You will be served exquisite local cuisine as you watch the warm flicker of flames from the fireplace, accompanied by classical music.

A Family Adventure

Durrell Wildlife Camp – Jersey, the Channel Islands

Set in 32 acres of rolling Jersey countryside, the Durrell Wildlife Park is home to around 120 species of exotic animals, including bears, orang-utans and gorillas. Its five-star Wildlife Camp gives you the opportunity to stay at the heart of this animal oasis in a state-of-the-art glamping pod. This is ‘glamorous camping’, indeed!

Each pod features electricity points and Wifi, enabling your phone-loving kids to send all their pictures straight away to jealous friends, as well as a woodburning stove – perfect for keeping you toasty warm even during a winter visit. A modern kitchen, al fresco dining table and separate pod with a fully-flushing toilet and shower will ensure that even the most camping-phobic among your party will be able to appreciate modern comforts.

Where else in the UK can you wake up to the sound of gibbons, lemurs and cranes just outside your bedroom door?

Make Sure You…

Take advantage of free entry to the Durrell Wildlife Park – which starts right outside the camp! There’s plenty to explore during your stay. A recent client told us that they saw it as an excellent opportunity to educate the kids about the importance of wildlife conservation… but it was also one of the most fun and laughter-filled family holidays they have ever had.

If you’re a family of animal-enthusiasts, I’d highly recommend booking one of their animal experiences. You can Meet the Apes, embark on a Meerkat & Otter Encounter, or – my personal favourite – be Keeper for a Day.

A Secret Escape

Dona Arminda – La Palma, Canary Islands

La Palma is known as one of the quieter, more peaceful islands of the Canaries, which makes it the ideal setting for one of our favourite secluded escapes: Dona Arminda. Nestled at the heart of a banana plantation, this traditional canary-style country house has just a handful of rooms, making you feel more like a treasured guest than a customer.

If you value old-world charm, you’ll love that the hotel has lots of quirky nooks and crannies to explore and is chocked full of beautiful antique furniture. Far and away the most commented-upon feature among our clients is Dona Arminda’s breakfast spread, which is served on the terrace. Expect a never-ending feast of fruit, meats, cheeses, eggs and pastries, all freshly prepared.

Sun, stars and serenity abound amongst the banana trees. This hidden gem has to be experienced to be appreciated.

Make Sure You…

Take advantage of this oasis of calm – curl up with a book in a hammock, or swim gentle lengths in the outdoor pool. If you do plan on leaving the hotel, I would advise renting a car (which Prestige Holidays would be more than happy to sort out for you). The Blue Flag beach of Los Cancajos is just a ten-minute drive from the finca.

Many clients are astounded by the beauty of the vast night sky in La Palma. I would highly recommend booking one of Ad Astra’s astronomical experiences for something a little different. Their G-Astronomic Dinner, for example, offers a six-course menu followed by a stargazing session with a qualified Starlight Guide and Astronomer.

If you’re looking for an extra special holiday that will provide you with memories you can cherish for a lifetime, Prestige Holidays has the experience and knowledge to find you the perfect fit. Just get in touch with one of our friendly sales team to book your dream break.
