Olympic Lagoon Resort
With over 300 sunny days a year, Paphos in Cyprus is a dream holiday destination for sunshine seekers. If you’re looking to stay somewhere that caters to your every whim, I have to mention the 5-star Olympic Lagoon Resort. Looking out across a Blue Flag beach to the temperate waters of the Mediterranean beyond, this newly-refurbished hotel is an excellent choice for families.
Top tip: book a Family Junior suite, which can sleep up to five people in complete comfort. Sliding doors partition off the sleeping space, allowing everyone to enjoy a peaceful night!
What I love about the Olympic Lagoon is its fun approach to design. The resort gives you an impressive choice of five restaurants, each of which has its own theme. The Royal Olympic is the main restaurant serving breakfast and a varied buffet dinner daily, while light snacks and drinks can be enjoyed at the Italian Snackeria during the day.
It is at the other dinner restaurants, however, that you can really enjoy your evening meals. Rock’n’Roll is a 50s-themed American diner, complete with an excellent soundtrack, which is well worth a visit during your stay. KIKU is a tasty Teppanyaki and sushi restaurant – see if you can get the kids to try raw fish for the first time! You also have the choice to dine at the Captain’s Deck, an à la carte restaurant that can be enjoyed once a week without supplement.
For the Kids
With a crèche for babies (over 6 months), a kids’ club for 3- to 12-year-olds and a teen club for 12- to 17-year olds, the Olympic Lagoon is sure to entertain your little ones, no matter their age. I have also heard very positive things about the nightly entertainment put on at the Arena, which is great fun for all the family.
Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf
The Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf is perfect for what I call ‘fresh air families’ – those who love to be out together in the brilliant Canarian sunshine. Unlike many other all-inclusive resorts which could blend together in the memory, Sandos San Blas has a very distinctive vibe: set within the dramatic landscape of the volcanic San Blas Environmental Reserve, it encourages its guests to connect with nature and understand its geological heritage.
Whether you chose the large and well-stocked international buffet restaurant, Cueva de Atxoña, or the gourmet à la carte option, La Proa, you can be sure to taste the best of Mediterranean cuisine during your stay. A special selection of children’s meals ensures that picky eaters are well catered for, while no fewer than four bars will make sure that mum and dad are kept equally happy!
For the Kids
I believe that this is truly one of the best five-star resorts that I have come across for active families. The hotel runs myriad activities that both parents and children can enjoy together, whether sailing and kayaking on the lake, cycling around the Environmental Reserve or visiting the San Blas Ravine and Historical Experience Tunnel.
However, the fun doesn’t stop there. The Sandos San Blas Kids’ Club offers a staggering range of supervised activities for your young explorers (ages 4-12). Whether they want to try their hand at face painting or pottery in the miniclub area; water games and fishing in the pond; sports and climbing on the beach; or archaeology workshops by the lake – you can be sure that they’ll be won over (and worn out!) by the fabulous facilities at this resort.
