What to do in Tenerife

Tenerife - Beach at Bahia del Duque

Beaches in Tenerife

Tenerife has some high quality, man made beaches, most of a fine black shingle or sand. These are mainly around the major tourist resorts. Most have good access, meet stringent European standards of cleanliness and most offer shower facilities, sun beds, shades and water-sports.

There are many beaches in Tenerife and below are some of the ones you may be interested in:
To get to El Bullullo beach La Orotava) from Puerto de la Cruz you can walk through the banana plantations and up and down the cliffs for about 45 minutes, or you can just drive, or take a taxi for about 5 Euros. No matter how you get there you will certainly remember your journey for years to come. A bar is located by the beach and there are some basic facilities. Nice clean beach with great waves.

Las Teresitas  This is a very nice man made beach of golden yellow sand. .There are always some activities going on, such as beach volley, aerobics, etc. Facilities are quite good and there are some bars and simple restaurants. There are plenty of palm trees providing shade for the more sensitive on this wide beach, 1.5 km long. This is the most popular beach on the island and we understand why.

Playa de Las Americas is the most famous tourist area, and so this is where you will find plenty of small beaches, protected by long breakwaters to stop the made up sand banks being washed away. As it is the area with the most tourists the beaches are well populated but if you are prepared to walk along the promenade you should be able to find some quieter spots. This is also the area that you can find most types of water sports.

Los Cristianos What used to be a fishing village has today become a busy holiday area, with some large beaches including a new man made beach. One is 400 m long and 100m wide, which makes it one of the safest for bathers and especially for children

El Medano If windsurfing is what you are after, then this is the place for you. Usually a windy beach, this beach is near the airport and can sometimes be uncomfortable for bathers, but has been the perfect place for international windsurfing competitions. Please note that part of this beach is used by naturists.

Playa San Marcos Another fishing village, 20 km west of Puerto de la Cruz, with a nice black sand beach fringed by rocks. Except for weekends, this one is usually calm and not overcrowded, plus you have small restaurants along the beach.

Lago Martianez The complex of Costa Martiánez, in  Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most admired examples of man-made coastal transformation. It has sea water pools and facilities for public use.

Watersports

You can find pretty much any water sport in Tenerife, from Kite surfing to wind surfing, Scuba diving to sailing, sea canoeing to sport fishing and much more, most are found on or by the beaches but some hotels have their own arrangements too.  It would be impossible to give you details on all of them here so if you have a particular interest, do please contact us by phone or by using our enquiry form.

Other Activities

Birdwatching There is a high number of endemic species and subspecies that live on the island and it is easy to gain access to them. Climbing and Hiking Tenerife has perfect terrain for both. Canyoning and Caving, Horseriding and Mountain Biking are some of the other activities readily available.  Paragliding is very popular too

Family Fun and interesting things to see

As a family friendly destination there are, naturally, leisure parks of all descriptions from Aqualands to Jungle parks but probably the most famous and the most interesting is Loro Parque.
Loro Parque was founded in 1972 and it is the home to the worlds most important parrot collection with over 300 species. The park now occupies 135,000m2 . It is a fabulous day out, with the knowledge that it is not just another theme park but also a conservation based organisation and foundation, it is well worth a visit.  Entertaining attractions include a Sea-Lion show, Dolphin show, Penguinarium with a reproduction Antarctic climate – a stunning exhibit. Regardless of your age you can’t help but be fascinated by Loro Parque.

Whale and dolphin watching has become one of the most popular tourist activities in Tenerife and many visitors enjoy this magical and unforgettable experience which appeals to all age groups. The authorised trips allow you to see these great animals close-up. Although these extraordinary creatures are used to contact with humans this activity is strictly regulated to protect them.

Shopping

For many of us it is a great pastime wherever we are (though perhaps our husband’s wouldn’t agree) and Tenerife is no exception with a huge range of shops and styles on offer.  The range is enormous so we won't even attempt to make any suggestions other than – enjoy!

Nightlife

Such a varied choice but apart from the norm of restaurants and clubs there is the Tenerife Auditorium which hosts many classical and contemporary music events, which when posted will be updated on our Events page above.  There is also The Pyramid de Arona which puts on spectacular shows and is easily accessible from most of our hotels in the south.

Space dictates that we stop here but by now you will have worked out that whatever your interest there is plenty of choice for you in Tenerife.
