An unusual five star hotel in Choupana overlooking Funchal

This most unusually designed hotel is mainly built of wood and stone, with décor from Asian and African cultures, but it still retains very strong Portuguese influences too – the overall effect is pleasing to the eye.

The property stands at about 1500 feet, in a commanding position, overlooking the city of Funchal and the sea below, surrounded by forests and countryside, an ideal getaway. 

ACCOMMODATION

The very spacious modern guest accommodation is in 34 single storey bungalows, and consists of 58 deluxe rooms garden view or bay and distant seaview and 4 large suites. All comfortable rooms have a large verandah for a pre-dinner drink or to watch the sunset, large twin beds, a mini-bar, tea making tray, Nespresso coffee machine, free safe, cable TV, DVD Player and Internet access. Suites also have a heated outdoor Jacuzzi and a hi-fi system.

DINING 

The Xôpana Restaurant – that’s pronounced “Choupana” – offers a choice of menus including an unusual fusion of Oriental and European cuisine. For more choice we recommend you pay for meals locally. We do include the Gala meals on 24 and 31 Dec in our prices. Perhaps breakfast on your verandah would be the best way to start the day! The Basalt Bar serves drinks and snacks all day, but for afternoon tea a visit to the lounge is a must. Join the chef for a cooking lesson after a visit to the market to buy the ingredients.

SPA

Choupana Hills is proud of its Health and Beauty Spa, which provides a wide selection of treatments for mind and body with Elemis products. These include hot stone treatment and Oriental Ceremony. A Turkish steam bath and a sauna are available. The indoor pool includes a counter current area and a choice of water jet areas. There is one heated freshwater outdoor pool with large terraces for relaxation on warmer days.

We feel guests may prefer to have a hire car to explore this most beautiful island at their leisure, but the hotel’s courtesy bus is available for visits to Funchal. Palheiro Golf is a 10 minute drive and Santo da Serra Golf some 20 minutes.
