You can actually do nothing on this relaxed island!

As we have already mentioned this is an island in which to enjoy nature and relax, but for those that like some activity or outings we have some suggestions here. Once on island we cannot stress enough that our local staff are superb and if there is anything you would like to organise they will be very happy to do it for you.

Golf in La Gomera

This is relatively new to the island, with the Tecina Golf Course having only been open a few years, but it is proving more and more popular.

Tecina Golf is an 18 hole par 71, 6205 metres, course designed by Donald Steel. Set above the hotel Jardin Tecina, same ownership, with spectacular views of the Atlantic and Teide on Tenerife.  It is a demanding course and starts at top of the sloping hill and ends down nearer the sea, which by the way is visible from every green.
It has all the usual facilities including a chipping green with bunkers, putting green, PGA professional and the club house.  Guests of the Hotel Jardin Tecina can be transferred directly to the 1st Tee.

Beaches in La Gomera

Beaches are generally of black sand and pebble.

Playa Sanitago is the largest in on the island it is made up of mostly smooth stones with the black sand that is washed in on the tide.  The waters are clear and its sheltered position makes it safe swimming for children. It is next to the small port and marina, there are places for refreshment here and this is a good area for Scuba Diving and snorkelling.

San Sebastian Beach has services and facilities and is located in town, it has black sand and the breakwater off shore means the sea in calm here.

La Cueva Beach is just outside San Sebastian and is also black sand, this beach has a yatch club and a diving club too.  The surrounding area is rural fields and farms,

There are other beaches around the island some more accessible than others.  Other good beaches can be located in the Vallehermoso and Valle del Gran Rey areas.

Natural pursuits and more

Hiking and Trekking - The National Park of Garajonay is obviously the place to explore if you want to get back to nature and there are various organised tours or you could have a guide.  Walking through this area shows that there are genuinely some unspoilt areas left in the world, time does seem to have stood still here. Whatever way you choose to explore the National Park start at the visitors centre Juego de Bolas it has plenty of information that will help you. Or you can discover other rural areas just by taking a car out and stopping when the fancy takes you there is so much stunning scenery in the centre of this island.  Valle del Gran Rey is more agriculturally based, seeing how farmers cope on these steep hillsides which are terraced again is like a step back in time, no heavy farm equipment here.

Mountain biking can be done independently but if you don’t know the area we would recommend a local guide.  These and companies that organise tours and provide bikes are usually found in La Puntilla in Valle Gran Rey.

Horse riding is available on island but it must be said is limited. It is a lovely way to see the countryside and if it does interest you there are stables in Valle del Gran Rey.

Water based activities are the other attraction in La Gomera.

Diving is particularly popular with clean clear waters and a good fish population off shore which include Barracudas, Tuna and some species of Ray, smaller subtropical fish include the parrot fish.

Sailing is mostly done from the Marina in San Sebastian.

Boat trips are a great way to see the island from another point of view, Los Organos is a spectacular cliff face that due to weather and the sea has come to look like organ pipes, also on these boat trips you see hidden inlets and beautiful scenery.  Many stop for a swim or snorkel.  There are specific boat tips to go out dolphin or whale watching, always wonderful to see these in their natural habitat, there are approximately 20 species of dolphin around these waters. Deep sea fishing can also be enjoyed in La Gomera.

A visit to the village of El Cercado to see how the local ceramics are made, using traditional methods with not even a potters’ wheel, starting with the local red clay it is all done by hand.  You may be tempted to buy too!
