Events in Gozo
As a small island Gozo does not have a large list of annual events, but what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in local charm.
There are many village celebrations throughout the year, plus Victoria, the capital, has a good range of music and theatrical entertainments, though some of these performances are in Maltese. Also there are many art and photographic exhibitions on the island.
Here are some sample events coming up in Gozo
February
As in most European destinations Carnival is an important event in the Spring calendar. One of the most colourful festivals and in 2008 it will occur between 1 – 5 February, In Gozo, the main activities take place in It-Tokk, the main square in Gozo's capital Victoria and is like most Carnivals an event of colourful floats, children in fancy dress and other fun activities. For an alternative take on Carnival visit Nadur where the purpose of the costumes is not for fun but more for disguise, these costumes tend to be more grotesque and the occupants are generally silent to make sure they remain unidentified!
March
Easter falls in March in 2008 the Holy Week activities will be between 14 – 23 March 2008. The events are very much centred around the churches and there is pageantry and processions across the week before Easter culminating in various symbolic processions over the Easter weekend.
May
There is usually an exhibition of students of the School of Fine Arts which include paintings, church models, pottery, Gozo lace, gilded Maltese clocks, tapestries, wooden boat models, clay models, stained glass, parchment, tread filigree (Ganutel), and pyrography (wood burning designs).
October
The Cittadella Festival generally falls in October and is organised by the Leone Philharmonic Society based in the Aurora Theatre. It is an Arts and Culture festival usually spread across a week and involves choral and classical music concerts, folk dancing and art exhibitions with the main highlight being an Opera performance.
