Other Sporting Activities

There are regular sporting events in Bermuda please see What’s on in Bermuda for the up to date list.

Many locals are sport fanatics! Perhaps that is why so many excellent sports facilities exist. Choose from tennis, boat and water sports, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, cycling and spectator sports too. Brief details on some are below, but we can supply full facts on request.

On and under the water

Almost every imaginable activity on and under the sea is on offer somewhere in Bermuda. Here are some examples – as usual we have more information in the office.

Glass bottom boat cruise to see the reefs, wrecks and a wonderful selection of fish.

Snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, yacht charters, helmeted undersea walks, canoe and kayak rental, water skiing. Fishing, both reef and deep sea are available. The sea is a separate world and there are many ways to enjoy it in Bermuda.

Scuba Diving Several qualified diving schools with licensed staff offer instruction, equipment hire and diving tours. Bermuda waters range from an average 62°F in spring and autumn to 80°F in summer. There are over 200 species of hard coral here and marine life is unsurpassed in beauty. Visibility is generally up to 100 feet.

Wreck dives are popular too, with several suitable for novice or intermediate divers. Some diving schools also offer night dives from about $75.

Water Sports

Windsurfing is usually available year round with October-April the best period. Board rental and tuition are available.
Water skiing is enjoyed May- September. Licensed skippers do the driving, all rented equipment and instruction are from qualified instructors.
Snorkelling, parasailing and boat rental all add to the exciting range of activities.

Tennis There are more than 100 courts, many at hotels with floodlighting for evening play. Racquets and balls can be hired.

Horse Riding Experienced or not the island’s 2 stables welcome visitors. All rides are with qualified instructors.

Other sports Include squash with 4 courts available at the Bermuda Squash Club. Bird watching is best November-April with 687 acres of trails, parks and reserves.

Walking this lovely island

The Railway Trail – on foot! Yes, the railway closed in the late 1940’s, but in 1984 some 18 miles of its original route were cleared to allow visitors to enjoy the calm beauty and natural treasures of this lovely island. Seven different walks can be enjoyed from 1¾ miles to 3½ miles. Take your camera, but leave only your footprints!

Perhaps shank’s pony is not for you

Island Taxi Tours If you would like to see the island by taxi, many drivers will show you the most popular points of interest in about 3 hours. However if you would like something more personalised to include your interest in, perhaps the botanical gardens, National Trust properties, or historical sites, then we can personally recommend Flood Transport. This is the company who take you to your hotel on arrival, their ’phone number in Bermuda is 295 3589.

Shopping

Bermuda offers a range of sophisticated shopping from around the world – Scottish woollens, porcelain from Limoges, British tweeds, Irish linen, Italian leather, Belgian lace and gold, beautifully worked by local craftsmen. Don’t forget local black rum, jewellery and paintings. Duty free goods can be ordered at various outlets in Hamilton at least two days before departure.  These are then delivered to the airport, you collect them after clearing Passport Control. There is also a small duty free shop at the airport.

There is so much to do on such a small island…

Art Galleries and museums, glass blowing and other crafts up at Dockyard, or historical re-enactments up at St George’s and historical tours of the Royal Naval Dcokyard, the Underwater Institute, a tour of the Botanical gardens, these are just some of many options for a day out.

Swimming with dolphins

How about swimming with the dolphins which can be found at Dockyard, one of our all time favourites, we can pre book this for you.
